Bridal Fashion Week, which took place around New York April 11-14, featured an assortment of dresses and suits for the 2020 spring and summer seasons from various designers, both established and emerging.
Gracing the runways were collections that included a mix of intricately designed gowns, structured jackets and overcoats, ultraminimal looks, and a few men’s wear pieces from fashion houses like Ines Di Santo, Vera Wang, Reem Acra and Phuong My, a newcomer.
This season’s selection showcased something for just about everyone — whether you’re a bride who prefers comfort over couture, or maybe one who yearns to wear a work of art.
Here are some highlights of what we saw.
Outstanding Overcoats
Many designers traded cascading capes and cathedral-length veils for dramatic overcoats in varying lengths and styles. Theia, whose collection was inspired by the 1970s and Studio 54, paired a long sequined overcoat with a simple, streamlined gown for a fun, festive look. The Vietnamese designer Phuong My’s debut collection, inspired by the strength of women, featuring a structured overcoat, paired with a layered skirt for a bold statement. Berta’s collection featured an elaborate blazer paired with pants and a corset bodice.
Bridal Short Suits
A twist on the power suit has emerged, with the prevalence of shorts on the runway. Ines Di Santo, whose collection was inspired by a fairy tale dream, featured a bold, long sleeve blazer and shorts ensemble, adorned with laser-cut petals. Reem Acra’s show, titled the Thankyou Collection, showcased a leg-baring power suit, perfect for prewedding events or a modern wedding celebration. Mira Zwillinger’s Over the Rainbow collection featured a revealing short suit with intricate lace and mesh-tulle details.
Blissful Blush Tones
If leaping head first into a bright, bold, wedding dress is not your thing, Vera Wang has created stunning blush gowns in whimsical styles, that are a happy medium for the nontraditional bride who wants to stand out on her wedding day. Ines Di Santo and Reem Acra also featured pale pink hues in their collections this season.

Sky-High Slits
Bridal designers like Berta, Theia and Reem Acra all transformed traditional wedding gown silhouettes by adding modern embellishments and varying slits from modest to thigh high. These flirty gowns took the runway by storm, offering the perfect balance of classic style and feminine finishes.
Heavily Adorned Gowns
This year’s collections proved that too much is never enough, especially when it comes to intricate beading, floral appliqués, and dazzling jewels. Berta, Phuong My and Reem Acra were just a few of the many designers who sent heavily beaded and embroidered gowns down the runway this season.
Minimalist Style
While some brides love a bold, extravagant statement, others prefer understated elegance and timeless finishes, with a focus on construction. Amsale, known for clean, crisp, structured gowns, stayed true to the classic style the brand is known for in its spring 2020 collection. Carolina Herrera’s latest bridal collection was all about light and dreamy gowns with a modern twist on classic silhouettes that never go out of style. The Watters collection embraced all body types, with beautifully constructed figure-flattering gowns inspired by “the great lengths of time and distances one travels for love.”
Modern Men's Wear
Bridal Fashion Week has long been a no-boys-allowed affair, as most collections are bride focused. However, this year the designer Reem Acre collaborated with men’s wear designer Joseph Abboud to create a selection of custom-tailored pieces for grooms, which were shown alongside her couture gowns at St. Bartholomew’s Church in New York. Both Ms. Acra and Mr. Abboud’s exotic interpretation of wedding fashion perfectly complimented each other to create a distinctive worldly collection for modern grooms.
