Les Fleurs Studio, A Fashion Label Inspired By The Romantics - Forbes

One part original pieces and one part vintage, Les Fleurs Studio is all about romanticism.

The Spanish label, founded by Maria Bernad offers both unique vintage pieces as well as a collection designed and made with love in Spain by Bernad. And this love can be seen in her collections. She's also inspired by poetry that hails from the bygone eras such as the Romantic and the Renaissance.

As such you'll notice silk and pearls at the heart of her line. Proudly, every piece is created with recycled fabrics, raw silk and punctuated with natural pearls that for a Queen Victoria vibe (cue the multi-strand pearl choker...divine).

New for Spring/Summer '20 Les Fleurs Studio has introduced a sustainable capsule collection made up of statement organza fabric in statement silhouettes as well as vintage scarfs, handmade silk bags and pieces of jewelry.

Felicity Carter: What was your first fashionable memory?

Maria Bernad: My first fashionable memory was when I was a kid and my grandma use to make all my dresses, she would always let me choose the colors and fabrics, and this is where my love for fashion (more specifically design) was born.

FC: How, when, why did you get into the industry?

MB: Everything started when I got accepted in design school, I began learning more and more about fashion and its history and becoming increasingly interested in the industry. Simultaneously I started working as a stylist and occasionally as a model, it was like this that my relationship with brands deepened, and then through social media, I found the perfect platform to show my style, work and vision.

FC: How would you sum up the aesthetic?

MB: The aesthetic of Les Fleurs Studio are all my inspirations through these years, captured in one brand. I’ve always gotten all my inspiration from nature and art in general but above all from art history. It is visible that I love the fashion from the 1700s through the end of the 1800s and all the films made about this period in history.

FC: What is luxury to you?

MB: For me luxury is quality, high-end materials, attention to detail and where it’s been produced.

FC: Which was the first-ever piece that you designed and how did it come about?

MB: I designed the first jewelry collection for Les Fleurs Studio about a year ago, and it was composed by pearl necklaces with shell pendants. It was an overwhelming success that I didn’t expect.

FC: What was on your current mood board?

MB: In my mood board there’s always pastel colors and cream shades, combined with bright touches. Nature and its elements are always a key and center piece, but never anything related to the current times.

FC: Tell us about the process…

MB: Les Fleurs Studio is a brand divided by two, one part is the vintage collection. I look for the pieces myself, we restore them if necessary and organize shoots with them. Then we have the original collections all designed by me. We launch some capsule collections that are always sustainable, and then collections by season always produced with end of stock materials that are natural like silk or cotton, recycled buttons and ornaments. If there’s embroidery included in the garments, everything is done by hand. Our atelier is also a 100% sustainable, it’s a small one located in Madrid, that employs women that need a part time job to be able to take care of their families.

FC: What materials are your favorite to work with?

MB: As I previously said, I love working with natural materials but my favorites are raw and satin silk.

FC: Currently which is your favorite piece and how do you wear it/them?

MB: My current favorite piece is an organza blouse from the last Summer Spring collection from Les Fleurs Studio. I love wearing it in many different ways, with a pair or vintage jeans or even as a jacket.

FC: What are your long term goals for your company?

MB: Keep growing steadily and being able to remain sustainable, but also to keep having the time to look for vintage pieces myself combining it with a healthy balance between the design of the collections. And who knows, maybe having a physical store in the future.
