The Oscars have a strict dress code: formal attire. Even members of the media covering the show must stick with dark suits and dresses, no "club wear" (as the media packet says), sneakers or jeans allowed.
But when you're an A-list celebrity, you can take some liberties with your attire. Black tie doesn't necessarily mean a man must wear a boring tuxedo. In the case of this year's Academy Awards and after parties, it could also mean colorful suits, fun textures, unique cuts, a dress, some bling, a zip-up, a brooch and a tribute to a legend.
Here are eight Oscar attendees who brought some edgy fashion the red carpet.
Billy Porter
At this point, we expect Billy Porter to make a sartorial splash at every award show he attends. The Oscars was no exception: Last year, the "Pose" star wore a tuxedo dress, and this year he arrived in a gold-feathered bodice and print skirt inspired by Kensington Palace from British designer Giles Deacon.
Mahershala Ali
Mahershala Ali's all-black Zegna outfit looks sharp, but the dangling necklace and attached belt makes it even more interesting. The two-time Oscar winner leads the Ermenegildo Zegna spring/summer campaign.
Timothee Chalamet
You can joke that he looks like a valet, paramedic or janitor; but you certainly can't say that Timothee Chalamet's outfit is boring. The "Little Women" star turned heads in a shiny Prada zip-up ... tracksuit?
Spike Lee
Spike Lee dressed to honor Kobe Bryant. The director's custom Gucci suit was purple and gold with the late NBA star's number 24 written on the lapels. But that wasn't all: Lee wore purple glasses, a purple hat and Nike Kobe 9 Elite sneakers.
John Cho
A caramel colored suit with a black shirt and an off-center button? That's not something you typically see at an award show, but John Cho pulled off the Zegna look effortlessly.
Anthony Ramos
Those dazzling shoes! That opulent chain! "In the Heights" actor Anthony Ramos rocked a glitzy Dolce & Gabbana ensemble on Sunday.
Roman Griffin Davis
He may only be 12, but "Jojo Rabbit" actor Roman Griffin Davis is already adding extra flair to his tuxedos. At the Oscars, his collar had a fun pop of orange, the same color he wore to the Golden Globes.
Dean-Charles Chapman
It's nice to see "1917" actor Dean-Charles Chapman clean up at the Oscars! His fresh Celine by Hedi Slimane tux with its red flower on the lapel was dapper and delightful on the red carpet.
Best dressed: Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Janelle Monae rule the Oscars carpet
Worst dressed: These stars didn't have our favorite looks
