The Vogue Book Club: What Our Editors Are Reading During Fashion Month (Including Anna!) - Vogue

The one constant about Fashion Month is that you wait. A lot. A show scheduled for 1 p.m. typically may not start until 1:15 or 1:45. So I like to bring along a book to pass those maddeningly idle moments spent sitting in my seat. But not a novel or anything that requires deep concentration, because yes, eventually the show will start and you will have to shift your attention to that. So, someone's memoir or collected letters or essays are what I usually turn to. This month, I'll be bringing the newly published Life Isn’t Everything: Mike Nichols, as Remembered by 150 of His Closest Friends, an oral history of the Oscar, Tony, and Emmy-winning director. The book, compiled by Ash Carter and Sam Kashner, is full of fascinating stories, both funny and poignant, about movies like The Graduate and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf, and stars like Elizabeth Taylor and Meryl Streep—easily consumed in random readings of a half hour or so at a time. Then it’s back to fashion! —Stuart Emmrich, Editor, Vogue.com

I find myself not having too much during time fashion week to get reading done, so I've taken to re-reading Mary Gaitskill's collection of short stories, Bad Behavior. My roommate lent me her copy of the book last year, and I found the writing to be so sharp that I read them all in a day. It's been nice refreshing myself with Gaitskill's perceptive depiction of a bygone New York City by reading a story or two while I have a few minutes between shows. —Rachel Hahn, Fashion News Writer

I'm basically on the road for a month, so it's a great opportunity for me to catch up on my reading. This trip, I am going to try to read the entire third part of Hilary Mantel's Wolf Hall trilogy, which is 726 pages in length. —Anna Wintour, Editor in Chief

The second volume that I'm going to try to read on my trip is The Dolphin Letters, which is the correspondence between Robert Lowell and Elizabeth Hardwick, so that probably won't be a quick read either. —Anna Wintour, Editor in Chief
